We hope that it's required for the customer's phone number when they place a order,because when we ship it,it;s necessary for the phone number and it also assist carrier to deliver to customer in time.
In addition,if any problem,we also can contact with customer.Sometimes,we send e-mail and message,but customer maybe doesn't receive.

Currently if the buyer purchase using credit card, they are required to put in their phone number. If buyer purchase using PayPal , then the phone number field is optional.
The thing about enforcing phone number is that it might lower your conversion rate. So some sellers like it, and some sellers don't like it, we will consider this feature for enforcing phone number for all type of payment method.
