Labradorite Introduction to the meaning and uses of the labradorite

The tradition of the labradorite demand of the Inuit people fell from the frozen fire of the aurora borealis, an ordinary stone that transforms the extraordinary, shining in a mystical light that separates the world awake from the invisible realms. It is, in all respects, a Magic Stone, a crystal of shamans, diviners, healers and all who travel and embrace the universe seeking knowledge and guidance. For self-discovery, it is excellent for awakening one's own inner spirit consciousness, intuition and psychic abilities.

The labradorite is also the most powerful protector of the mineral kingdom, creating a protective force through the aura and strengthening the natural energies from within. It protects against the negativity and misfortunes of this world and provides a safe exploration on alternate levels of consciousness and facilitates visionary experiences of the past or the future. [Ahsian, 226]

The labradorite is a member of the Feldspar family and is appreciated for its remarkable color play, known as labradorescencia. The stone, usually gray-green, dark gray, black or grayish-white, is composed of aggregate layers that refract light as iridescent pebbles, gold, pale green, or red copper flashes. The predominant blue varies within the light, showing shadows from the deepest blue to various shades of pale, almost blue-green. It was discovered in Labrador, Canada, by Moravian missionaries in 1770 who named it for the area. However, it is referred to in legends by older Inuit tribes, and was known to be used by the Boethuk peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador. It became a popular jewel in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. [Simmons, 225] [Eason, 163] [Melody, 367]

The rarest varieties of labradorite are the golden labradorite, a transparent color of gold or champagne, and Spectrolita, an intense variety that shows the entire spectrum of color, discovered in Finland in the 1940s.
