The Detroit tradition of putting a large engine in a smaller, lightweight car got an early start in 1955 when Buick put its powerful 322 cubic inch, 236 hp V-8 into its lightweight, mid-size Special body and called it the Century Riviera. Top speed – Buick claimed over 100 mph – and thus the car was called a Century.
