About Rooster Pin & Needle

Handmade in North Carolina - Rag quilts, pieced quilts, totes, pillows, runners, mugrugs, holiday decor, gifts, little dresses ....

I've been trying my hand at all sorts of odd projects and techniques n' so forth for as long as I can remember.

I've spent evenings browsing other talented people's pages and tutorials and also hitting up creative minds from within my friends and family albeit a small group of people as I'm nearly a hermit in my sewing room...

Tell us a bit about yourself and Rooster Pin & Needle ?
To tell the truth, I'd get a lot more creating in were it not for my love of procrastination... (My cousin Mark says that life has a funny way of getting in the way of living). Who knew hair-stylists were so philosophical? I have a lot of loves. (besides my family) Food, birds, flowers, sewing, digitizing, photography, soapmaking - My family and I live here in North Carolina which is where I love living and am happy to have the opportunity to create and sew whatever and whenever =)
How did you get started in doing what you do? How long have you been creating?
I started dabbling in crafts & sewing at around age 15 or 16 and then throughout the course of my adulthood have had the occasion to learn more and create things for my kids, grandkids and extended family. Now what once was a hobby and a way to keep busy and help my family make ends meet is also a full blown obsession and a love that I hope never sees an end.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Nature, colors, fabric collections, my mood and the seasons and holidays. Fall has me thinking of pumpkins, leaves and hues of oranges golds and browns. Spring brings thoughts of flowers, romance, Easter,,, Summer means warmth, sunny skies, bright colors and ocean breezes... Winter has me thinking snuggly blankets, chunky totes, Christmas stockings and tree skirts.
What was your first creation? Do you have a favourite?
My first handmade item was an ornament made from plaster of paris poured into a chocolate mould with half a paperclip inserted through the back at the top for hanging. I was about 15 then and I don't have any pictures of it. My favorite - believe it or not is a little pin cushion I made for myself last year (shown above). Up until that point, I'd been using a beaten and worn out small satin heart cushion that I'd made about 13 years prior.
What have you created recently?
The lastest creations include a twin quilt with pops of bright colors in the form of squares and little cotton Easter and Spring toddler dresses. I've also made a few sling bags or slouch bags as they are called. My favorite is the reversible denim one that ties at the shoulder.
