Tell us a bit about yourself and Designs By Maral ?

I always loved creating different types of jewelry, especially southwestern, western and sea life. Designs By Maral was started 3 years ago so I could share my creations with the public. Currently I make my designs in my spare time, but because I enjoy it so much, I would like it to be a full time endeavor.

How did you get started in doing what you do? How long have you been creating?

I started in my fathers business back in Lebanon. He owned a High end Jewelry Store and I would help out while going to school. We Later moved to New Jersey, where we continued to sell High Fashion Jewelry in New York City. I have now been creating for over 30 years. I now concentrate on less expensive but still quality items.

Where do you get your inspiration?

My inspiration came first from my family. My father and three brothers all were involved in the Jewelry Business. They were jewelry manufacturers and diamond cutters. I married my husband, Mark, who was born in Rhode Island, which at one time considered itself the Jewelry Capitol of the world. He was involved with manufacturing costume jewelry since 1972. Between both of us we have had a great number of years creating and making the latest fashions in jewelry.

What was your first creation? Do you have a favourite?

I don't have a favorite item I created. However, I like the new Bolo Ties I am making because I like the Southwest part of the U.S. It is rich in folklore and heritage. The designs are colorful and unique. My first creation was probably a simple earring with beads and a pendant. I still make and sell it. It has a feather and a Turquoise Bead. Turquoise is probably my favorite color to work with. I also like anything with a Kokopelli Theme.

What have you created recently?

My latest creation is a Sea Lion Necklace. It is adjustable 14-16 inches, has a black waxed cotton cord with a lobster claw clasp. The Sea Lion is plated in shiny imitation rhodium. It sits upon a Heart which is shiny black epoxy, which makes the Sea Lion really look great. I call it - I "Heart" Sea Lions! I make new and exiting styles every day because I enjoy it so much.
