About PolkadotPossum

PolkadotPossum Designs is about handmade, it's about color, it's about whimsy! My fiber/mixed-media art quilts, ACEOs, handmade journals, bags and purses, greeting cards and fiber and mixed-media jewelry are all designed and handmade by me. My designes are constructed with hand-dyed and painted fabrics, machine piecing, applique, embroidery, quilting, hand stitching and hand beading.

All of my creations are centered around fiber in some form. Fabrics can be cut, dyed, torn, shaped, twisted and stitched into all shapes and forms imaginable and I enjoy the freedom and flexibility of fiber and mixed media art. My original designs feature bold, bright colors and abstract images. Color is my passion; especially when juxtaposed with graphic black and white.

Enjoy your visit to my shop and let me know if you have any questions!

Tell us a bit about yourself and PolkadotPossum ?
I'm Cindy, a wife and mom of boy-girl twins. I teach university chemistry by day and I design and create new fiber and mixed-media art by night. PolkadotPossum grew out of my need to create and share my creations with the world. At PolkadotPossum you will discover original and whimsical fiber/mixed-media art quilts, ACEOs, handmade journals, home decor and storage items, bags and purses, greeting cards and fiber and mixed-media jewelry.
How did you get started in doing what you do? How long have you been creating?
I learned to sew and crochet with my grandmother when I was a young child. I was always making art and working on crafts at home. I continued sewing and crocheting through college until the demands of graduate school became too much. However, I found that I really missed the creative process in my life. I had always been interested in quilting and started taking quilting classes when I had the chance. I soon found that I wasn't happy working with patterns; I needed to start working with my own designs. I found designing and creating my own works of art to be very satisfying and challenging. I began to enter my work in shows around the country. My art quilts have been juried into art and quilt shows all across the United States and have won numerous awards.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I often get my inspiration from color. I will just start playing with a certain color of cloth and ideas start forming! I also draw inspiration from designs and patterns I see in everyday life and in books. I especially love art deco designs and the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
What was your first creation? Do you have a favourite?
My first true original creation was a quilted wall hanging I made for an annual national challenge held by Hoffmann Fabrics in 1990. It was also my first completed quilt. I won third place in the Hoffmann Challenge that year and that was exhilarating! I still have that piece and it is one of my favorites.
What have you created recently?
Recently I have been working on a series of fabric boxes inspired from Chinese take-out boxes. These have proven to be very popular. They are fun to make and can be embellished in so many ways. I am also starting on a new series of quilted wallhangings in an improvisational style. These are only in the thought process right now but I hope to start on them soon!
