I specialize in knitting nachaq's (spelled nacaq in the Yupik language). A nachaq is basically the hood of a parka (atkuk). These days it is also a word used for hat since not everyone wear's parka's anymore. I remember walking into my grandmother's house on cold winter days and nights and my grandmother and/or aunt (if she was there) would ask, "Nauga nacan?" - "Where is your hat?" I never liked wearing hats because I didn't like getting hat hair! Another reason why I love nachaq's so much- you never get hat hair with them! Not only that, but they also work well as a scarf. Made so they can be worn up over your head like a hood but also covering your neck at the same time to keep you warm. Gorgeous, warm and versatile!
Have you ever seen anything like this absolutely gorgeous nachaq? It has taken me ages to get it finished!
Knit with Rowan Kidsilk haze which is a very fine lace weight yarn and measures 21.5 inches long and 13.5 inches wide.
Kidsilk haze yarn is made up of 70% Super kid mohair and 30% Silk which makes this nachaq luxurious, soft, and nice and warm. You can wear it over your head like a hood, or down around your neck like a scarf (but better!). It is long enough to tuck it into your jacket, sweater, coat even though you are wearing it up like a hood. The back of your neck won't ever get cold! No more frozen ears! No more frozen cheeks or chin or neck!
The pattern I used is from "Arctic Lace," By Donna Druchunas who gave me permission for using it. Check out her site:

She did an amazing job on her book, "Arctic Lace," I recommend it to everyone because it was done so beautifully and most importantly everything was portrayed correctly.
If you love qiviut, then this is the book for you. You won't be disappointed!
Care Instructions: Hand wash cold water, mild detergent, rinse (of course) in cold water. Make sure you do not SOAK the item (meaning leaving it in the water for a long period of time). Pick it up carefully, with both hands, make sure it doesn't stretch getting it from out of the sink (or wherever you're washing it) to the towel. Do not ever twist or wring, instead roll between a dry and clean towel (like a cinnamon roll) and squeeze the water from it. Reshape and lay flat to dry. Keep away from sunlight.
The care instructions might seem like a bit of work, but with this yarn, it is so worth it!
