Tell us a bit about yourself and My Addictions ... Handcrafted Jewelry by Patti ?
My shop names pretty much describes me...I am addicted to handmade beads and the jewelry they become! My favorite technique is wire wrapping - it amazes me what wire can do, and when encapsulated with a beautiful bead, well that to me is wearable art! I started making jewelry a few years ago, inspired by the craftiest of crafters, my mother. She had taken several lapidary classes when she lived in Florida several years ago, and her daughters and grand-daughters were the guinea pigs of her designs....no complaints here! I spend hours hunting for crystals, gemstones, and handmade artisan beads and components. For me, the bead dictates the design, be it earrings, necklace, bracelet, ankets, even rings. I began by using sterling silver, but have recently ventured into copper, brass, and bronze. The warmth and depth of these metals enhance the beauty of the chosen components. I hope to one day venture into bead making, lampwork beads in particular. But until then, I will continue my quest in finding the most beautiful beads I can to incorporate into my designs.
How did you get started in doing what you do? How long have you been creating?
I have always been happiest creating anything with my hands - sewing, needlepoint, crocheting, cooking - I still love coloring books! But, I ventured into jewelry making a little over three years ago. My "studio" began as a small, tool-type storage box that I would empty out onto my kitchen table on a daily basis. Then, when my beads and supplies outgrew my storage box, I bought another box. Soon, there were plastic storage bins everywhere in my kitchen! So, I now call my basement my "studio", complete with four separate work tables, several Ott lamps, and a few storage cabinets for my supplies.
Where do you get your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from EVERYWHERE! In my "previous life", I was a proposal writer for architects - I would marvel at the images of the structures in my proposals, the lines and curves, the colors of the bricks and mortar, the shapes of the windows, the filigree on wrought iron. Everyday, while walking my best-friend forever, Sam, I stare at the trees and I am inspired by the colors of the leaves -- all green, but different shades, and they all seem to blend. The twists and turns of the branches on the trees, or the bark on the birch tree that sheds its skin - all inspiring to me. So, whether man-made or nature-made, the shapes and colors of my surroundings inspire my craft.
What was your first creation? Do you have a favourite?
I was in a bead store and bought a book on Easy Wire Wrapping. Most people would buy the book, take it home, study it, pick a project, write a list of items needed....etc. Not me! I picked a project and found everything I needed in the store. Two and half hours later (eye pin....what is an eye pin?), I dumped everything on the table and began my "easy wire bracelet project". Ha! This project was actually marked "intermediate level" and I should have paid attention! Beautiful, smoky brown crystals were wire wrapped together to form this bracelet. Although it took me a day and half to complete, I finished it! Now when I buy a book (and I have many favorites with techniques that have been dog-earred or marked with scraps of post-it notes), I actually study the technique and practice it first, before attempting to complete it! My picture-taking techniques have also improved....
What have you created recently?
Almost daily, I go to my studio to create something....it's my outlet. Most recently, my mother asked me if I had any beads to make her a necklace to match a new outfit for her. The color was a deep watermelon - and I had nothing on hand that even remotely matched the striking pinkish tones in the jacket. So, I searched catalogs, online and paper, and found a beautful gemstone - Rhodochrosite. So, I made her a necklace, a multi-strand bracelet, and earrings, comprised of this beautiful gemstone and some gorgeous handmade bronze components.
